Baroque poses depend on contrapposto ("counterpoise"), the tension within the figures that moves the planes of shoulders and hips in counterdirections. Whilst both of the performances on reconstructed echo flutes are splendid, the actual ‘echoes’ provided by the novel instruments employed sound less than convincing to my ears, not that it matters. The sound sample below is an oboe solo accompanied by a string quartet. But Quantz went so far as to claim it beneficial to have two keys on the flute, one for E flat and another for D sharp.
